While visiting Madinah is not a mandatory part of Hajj or Umrah, the city holds a special place in the hearts of many pilgrims due to its unique significance. Pilgrims can choose to visit Madinah either before or after completing their Hajj or Umrah rituals. There are no specific requirements like ihram or talbiyah for visiting Madinah or the Prophet’s Mosque.

The Significance of the Prophet’s Mosque

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) personally took part in building this mosque, referred to it as “My Mosque,” and led prayers there for many years. He mentioned that praying in the Masjid an Nabawi is more rewarding than praying in any other mosque, except for the Sacred Mosque in Makkah.

Anas رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever offers 40 prayers consecutively in my mosque, without missing any, will be protected from Hellfire, other punishments, and hypocrisy.” (Ahmad)

There is a importance of visiting three mosques: the Ka`bah in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. After completing Hajj or Umrah it is highly recommended to visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, known for its five minarets and the green dome marking the Prophet’s grave.

Upon entering the mosque, pilgrims should reflect on the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) teachings and his contributions to Islam. The Prophet educated Muslims on their faith and promoted values of brotherhood, justice, and equality. Pilgrims should pray two rakahs upon entering, then visit the Prophet’s grave and say: “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and that you are His Messenger.” It is also recommended to greet the tombs of Caliph Abu Bakr and Caliph Umar Ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه.

Visiting the Masjid an Nabawi deepens a pilgrim’s devotion by recalling the rich history and glory of Islam, serving as a source of inspiration for Muslims around the world.
